Peel the apples, cut them into quarters, remove the core, and slice the fruit.

Add the egg yolks one by one to the butter mixture, mixing briefly after each addition.

Add the flour along with the milk to the mixture - mix on low speed and only until the flour is combined - do not overmix.

Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.

Add the egg whites to the batter and gently fold with a spatula.
Transfer the batter to the prepared pan (greased with butter and dusted with breadcrumbs), arrange apple slices on top, lightly pressing them into the batter.
Bake in an oven preheated to 180 degrees Celsius (top/bottom heat) for about 50-60 minutes - until a toothpick comes out clean.
After baking, cool the apple cake, and before serving, sprinkle with powdered sugar.
