tiramisu in glasses with dulce de leche and salted caramel liqueur

What is caramel tiramisu?

Today I invite you to a very simple and quick caramel tiramisu. This tiramisu is an excellent dessert that looks beautiful when served in individual glasses. Therefore, it will be perfect for special occasions. You can prepare and serve it for holidays – even the upcoming Easter holidays, for various family occasions, or for meetings with friends. You can place the dessert in glasses on a sweet table, where it will tempt guests to taste it. You must try it!

Origin of the famous tiramisu dessert

Tiramisu is a famous dessert originating from Italy. “Tira mi su” literally translates to “pick me up”, but not so literally, rather as “cheer me up”, and it must be admitted that tiramisu cheers you up like few other things! It is still difficult to say exactly where tiramisu was born, but one of the places where it first appeared is Venice, and this happened in the 1950s-1960s.

How does caramel tiramisu differ from traditional tiramisu?

Traditional tiramisu consists of layers of ladyfingers soaked in strong espresso coffee mixed with alcohol (most often almond amaretto liqueur), which are layered with a velvety cream. This cream is egg yolks whipped with sugar and rich mascarpone cheese. Additionally, the dessert is sprinkled with a layer of bitter cocoa or grated dark chocolate. This caramel tiramisu differs from traditional tiramisu in that it is not made with egg yolks; instead, heavy cream is used. Dulce de leche is also not added to traditional tiramisu, but in my version, dulce de leche replaces sugar and adds a unique flavor to the cream.

I encourage you to watch my short video on preparing such a traditional tiramisu and, while you’re at it, to try out the recipe for it.

Ingredients needed to prepare caramel tiramisu

To prepare this tiramisu, you will need a few basic ingredients that you can easily buy in larger supermarkets or discount stores. Below is a list of the products I used.

  • mascarpone cheese – to prepare this tiramisu, you will need 500 g of mascarpone cheese – you can buy two smaller packages or one large one. Remember that the cheese must be well chilled before preparing the dessert.
  • dulce de leche mass – I used ready-made dulce de leche from a can (mine was from Gostyń). For the dessert, you need about 200 g of dulce de leche – but how much you use depends on you and how sweet you like your desserts. After purchasing, put the can in the refrigerator to chill.
  • heavy cream – I added 250 ml of heavy cream from a carton to the tiramisu. I used cream with 30% fat content. You can also use 36% cream – only then will the caloric content of the dessert slightly increase. The cream must also be well chilled before preparing the dessert.
  • coffee – to soak the ladyfingers, you will need strong coffee – I prepared coffee from instant coffee – for 400 ml of water, I used 5 teaspoons of coffee, and I also added 3 teaspoons of sugar.
  • liqueur – to emphasize the caramel flavor of the tiramisu, I added a small glass of salted caramel liqueur to the coffee. You can even make such salted caramel liqueur yourself at home. You can replace it with amaretto liqueur or coffee liqueur. If you don’t want to add alcohol to the tiramisu, you can completely omit the liqueur.
  • ladyfingers – for tiramisu, special elongated ladyfingers are traditionally used (as seen in the photo below). You can easily find them in Lidl or Biedronka.

Preparing caramel tiramisu: step by step

This caramel tiramisu is much simpler and quicker to prepare than the traditional dessert. There’s no need to worry about eggs and yolks and scalding them. Just quickly prepare the cream, coffee, and you can arrange everything in a container or in glasses.

How to prepare caramel cream for tiramisu?

You can prepare the caramel cream, which is the base for layering the ladyfingers, in a few minutes. Simply blend chilled ingredients: mascarpone cheese, dulce de leche mass, and heavy cream together at high speed with a mixer. Mix everything for a few minutes – until you get a nicely thick and stable caramel cream.

Preparing coffee-soaked ladyfingers

Prepare the coffee for soaking the ladyfingers in advance, as it needs to cool completely. But what if you forget about the coffee? In such situations, I manage by pouring a minimal amount of hot water over the coffee, adding sugar, and stirring until it dissolves. Then I add cold water, and I have perfect coffee for soaking the ladyfingers. To make it easier to soak the long ladyfingers, I pour the coffee into a flat and wide bowl. I dip the ladyfingers in the coffee on both sides, holding them in the coffee for a moment so that it soaks slightly into them. I arrange these soaked ladyfingers at the bottom of the mold. If you are arranging them in a glass, it is probably worth breaking them in half – it will be more convenient to place them at the bottom.

How to make caramel tiramisu without coffee?

Don’t like coffee, or want children to be able to eat tiramisu? In the second situation, you can replace coffee with Inka cereal coffee. In the first situation, if you don’t like the taste of coffee, you can soak the ladyfingers in slightly sweetened water. If you want it to have a better taste, you can add a little almond extract to it.

Ways to serve caramel tiramisu

You can prepare and serve tiramisu in an airtight rectangular container or mold. Tiramisu, due to its layers, looks beautiful in glass, transparent molds. So if you have a glass mold about 20×20 cm or slightly larger, use that. Instead of one large mold, you can serve tiramisu in individual glasses. This is a very convenient and elegant way. You can use nice glasses, or like me, wide-bowled goblets.

How to decorate tiramisu?

The caramel cream I prepared for the tiramisu is wonderfully thick and holds its shape very well. Therefore, if you transfer it to a piping bag and squeeze it onto the ladyfingers, the cream itself will look so decorative that nothing else is needed! Cream sprinkled with bitter cocoa or grated chocolate will look incredibly appetizing. You can grate dark chocolate or even caramel chocolate, or make shavings with a slotted knife and sprinkle them over the tiramisu. You can also additionally arrange or stick half-cut ladyfingers into the cream, or arrange mini ladyfingers.

How many calories does tiramisu have?

While tiramisu is incredibly delicious and beautiful, it is an extremely caloric dessert. Perhaps that’s the only thing stopping me from preparing it every week ;) When dividing the recipe into eight portions, each will unfortunately have almost 550 kcal. It must be admitted that this is a staggering number. However, if you convert the entire tiramisu into 100 g portions, 100 g of caramel tiramisu will have about 274 kcal (carbohydrates 21 g, fat 19 g, protein 4 g). One hundred grams is roughly half a glass. And now you just have to stop yourself from eating only half a portion, not the whole thing. Maybe share a glass with a loved one – it will be pleasant and less caloric ;)

I hope this caramel tiramisu tastes as good to you as it does to me, and that your loved ones will be grateful that you made it. I would be delighted if you shared your impressions with me and the readers of my blog! Leave a comment under the recipe.
