Why You Should Make This Quick Whole Orange Cake
I recently had a craving for something sweet to enjoy with my coffee, but there was nothing at home. So I hopped on TikTok and came across this recipe from Sivan for a moist orange cake made in a blender. It didn’t take much convincing, and within minutes I had the cake batter ready! The recipe itself is super simple and quick, but you’ll need a blender or food processor to make it. A countertop blender works best, but you can also use a personal smoothie blender (the bottle-style kind) or an immersion blender to blend the whole orange with the sugar until smooth. So, if you’re in the mood for a quick and fragrant citrus cake to enjoy with your coffee, this recipe is just for you!
What Ingredients Do You Need to Make Orange Cake?
You only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this quick orange cake. You probably already have most of them in your kitchen, and the rest are easy to find at any grocery store. Below, you’ll find a short list of the ingredients I used, along with some possible substitutions.
- a large organic orange is best, but a regular one will work too. If using a regular orange, make sure to wash it thoroughly with hot water first. I used a large orange that weighed almost 300 g, so look for a nice big one. If you only have small oranges, use one and a half instead, and squeeze the juice from the remaining half to make the glaze.
- I used canola oil, but you can also use another mild-flavored oil. Melted coconut oil works well, too.
- I used Polish type 450 flour, but you can use another type of wheat flour. I think you could also try a gluten-free flour blend. Sivan suggests replacing the wheat flour with almond flour – in that case, use about 190 g (1 ½ cups) of almond flour. Just remember to use gluten-free baking powder, or replace the baking powder with about ½ teaspoon of baking soda.
How to Choose the Best Orange for Cake?
When choosing an orange, I usually go for ones with a slightly protruding bottom. I once heard that these oranges tend to be sweeter, and so far, it’s always worked for me! :) During blood orange season, you can also use blood oranges. Their beautiful red color will give your orange cake a lovely look!
How to Make Whole Orange Cake Lower in Calories?
The cake itself isn’t particularly high in calories, but if you’d like to make it lighter, here are two simple options. First, you can skip the glaze altogether. This will bring one slice down to about 254 calories. Second, you can replace the sugar in both the cake and the glaze with erythritol. In that case, one slice with erythritol glaze will have around 216 calories, saving you about 100 calories per slice.
I hope this easy orange cake becomes a favorite in your home, especially since it’s so quick and simple to make! Be sure to leave a comment on the recipe and let me know how you liked it.
