Mexican churros

What are churros with chocolate sauce?

Churros with chocolate sauce are an excellent dessert that will satisfy even the greatest gourmets. They are perfect for parties, family gatherings, or get-togethers with friends. Serving them warm, you will delight your guests not only with their taste, but also with their aroma and appearance.

There’s nothing better than crispy churros with melting chocolate topping! These delicious, traditional Spanish and Mexican treats are perfect for dessert or a snack. Try them today and see why churros with chocolate sauce are so beloved worldwide!

I also can’t resist the taste of churros with chocolate sauce :) We were recently in a Mexican restaurant and ordered churros for dessert there. Unfortunately, the churros themselves were a bit disappointing – too greasy for me, and I only ate half a portion. That’s why I decided to make them myself at home, and I must say they were a hundred times better than those from the restaurant.

Previously, a pumpkin churros recipe with pumpkin puree added to the dough appeared on the blog, but traditional ones had not yet been featured. I searched the internet for the best recipe and chose one from Cooking Classy, because it had many top ratings. As it is a recipe adapted from American cuisine, something often needs to be changed. I added more eggs, because with one egg, the dough was so thick that it was hard to mix, let alone pipe. With more eggs, the dough gained the right consistency and fried perfectly. Therefore, I am providing the recipe here with an increased number of eggs.

How to make churros – tips

How to make churros? To make churros, you need to prepare choux pastry dough for churros – similar to that for cream puffs or eclairs. To do this, boil water with butter, and when hot, add flour – stirring continuously while cooking until a thick dough forms. Cool the dough, then add eggs one by one, mixing after each addition until combined. Transfer the prepared dough to a strong piping bag so you can pipe it onto hot oil. If you have a metal star-shaped nozzle, attach it to the bag; this will give your churros a nice, ridged shape after frying.

How to fry churros?

Transfer the churros dough to a thick piping bag, preferably with a star-shaped nozzle attached (I use Wilton 1M). At first, I put the dough into a thinner Chinese decorating bag, and it burst because the dough was too thick for it. If you don’t have special thick piping bags, you can use, for example, a thicker freezer bag. If you don’t have a nozzle for piping the dough, cut off a corner of the bag to create an opening about 1 cm in diameter. Don’t make the opening too large, as you will pipe thick churros that will take a long time to fry. And remember, they still grow a bit during frying.

Once the fat is very hot, pipe the churros onto it – the length is up to you; I piped them about 7-10 cm long. To detach the dough, it’s a good idea to cut it with a knife.

Churros fry quickly, and once golden, remove them to a paper towel and pat off excess fat.

How to eat churros?

Immediately after drying, generously sprinkle the churros on all sides with fine sugar mixed with cinnamon. Even in this form alone, churros taste exquisite – especially when warm. You can also prepare a simple chocolate sauce for them – see my recipe where I showed how to make a simple chocolate sauce for churros. Instead of chocolate sauce, you can also use caramel sauce. It can be store-bought or homemade. If you want to make caramel sauce at home, I recommend my recipe for quick microwave caramel sauce.

And by the way, here’s an answer to a question that many of you might be wondering about. How many calories do churros have?

In my recipe, I provide the calorie count for churros weighing 100g – I don’t specify how many calories one piece has, because here one piece is not equal to another, and you can fry churros that are 7 cm long or 11 cm long – they won’t have the same calorie count. Remember that my churro kcal values are also slightly approximate, as I cannot precisely determine how much fat the churros absorbed during frying and how much of it remained on the paper towel. Therefore, the approximate kcal value for churros from my recipe is about 270 calories per 100g – I think this is not a terrible value and it’s worth eating at least a few pieces :)

I hope that with these tips, along with my photos and preparation video, you will make the best churros and surprise your whole family with this delicious Mexican dessert :)

Enjoy!
