Why is it worth baking such a quick poppy seed and apple cake?
The recipe for this quick and moist poppy seed cake caught my eye on Natalia Myszkowska’s (Nathallae) Facebook page. She called it dump cake. I understand where the name comes from, as it’s a zero-waste type of cake – many different ingredients found their way into it. But somehow, that name didn’t resonate with me, and it’s hard for me to imagine it encouraging others to eat the cake ;) In the comments under the recipe, I also saw other names for this cake – among others, lazy housewife’s cake or even Japanese poppy seed cake. For me, it’s not really a Japanese poppy seed cake – because although it’s made with grated apple, it uses a larger quantity and contains no flour – only poppy seed mass. Overall – call it what you will – the cake is very simple to make, nicely moist and tasty after baking. And at first glance, it doesn’t look like a poppy seed cake, so you can try to convince people who usually avoid poppy seed cakes to try it :)

What ingredients are needed to make this poppy seed cake?
As I wrote earlier, this cake is a bit like clearing out the fridge, and many different ingredients go into it. But each of them is very easily available in any store, or you might even have most, if not all, of them already. Below is a shortened list of the products I used and possible substitutes.
- ground poppy seeds – you need 100 g of ground poppy seeds here – that will be a well-heaped cup – you can get it, for example, at Lidl or in larger stores
- cocoa – you need bitter cocoa, it can be regular or defatted – if you don’t have it, or can’t consume it, add more flour – about two teaspoons
- Greek yogurt – I used full-fat and thick yogurt, you can replace it with thick plain yogurt, or natural skyr
- apples – I used one large apple – if you have small ones, then 2-3, hard apples will be best – like ligol, jonaprice, but use what you have
- heavy cream – for the chocolate frosting, I used UHT cream in a carton – for me, it’s 30% cream

I only have regular poppy seeds, how do I use them?
If you have regular poppy seeds, you will need a bit more time for preparation. First, you need to cook the poppy seeds. After they have completely cooled, you must drain them well and then grind them twice in a meat grinder. Only then can you add such poppy seeds to the cake.
How to make milk chocolate frosting?
If you prefer milk chocolate and like sweeter cakes, prepare the frosting the same way as with dark chocolate, but be sure to use less heavy cream. Here, only 50 ml of cream is enough – otherwise, the frosting will be too thin and will run off the cake! After preparing the frosting, set it aside to cool and thicken slightly – only then pour it over the cake.

Can dried fruits be added to the cake?
Yes, if you want to make a more “rich” and festive cake, you can add dried fruits and nuts. Raisins, walnuts, or orange peel will work great. Thanks to them, the cake will be even more aromatic. Before adding them to the cake, you can additionally mix the dried fruits with a little flour – so that they fall less to the bottom of the cake.

How to store easy poppy seed cake?
After baking and completely cooling, transfer the cake to an airtight container with a lid, or cover it with a cake dome. You can store the cake this way at room temperature for 2–3 days. Thanks to the addition of apples, it remains moist for a long time. If it’s very warm and humid at home, you can put the cake in the refrigerator to keep it fresh longer. You can also freeze the cake for about 3 months.
How many calories does the lazy housewife’s poppy seed cake have?
In the table below the recipe, I provided the calorie count for 100 g of cake. If you divide the whole cake into approximately 15 similar pieces, each will have about 352 kcal (carbohydrates – 35 g, proteins – 6 g, fats – 20 g). If you are on a reduction diet and want to lower the cake’s calorie count, you can omit the chocolate frosting – then a piece of cake without frosting will have about 297 kcal, and 100 g of poppy seed cake will have 409 kcal.

I hope this easy poppy seed cake will also find its way into your home and be a great idea for a quick, homemade bake for coffee or tea. If you try the recipe, be sure to let me know in the comments how it tasted! I would also be very happy if you share the recipe with your loved ones.
