why it's worth eating apples

Why is it worth eating apples?

Apples are not only a delicious fruit but also a source of many health benefits. That’s why it’s worth eating them every day, all year round. It’s best to eat raw fruit, but using them in processed form also has its value. Here are a few reasons why it’s worth eating apples:

  1. Rich in nutrients: Apples are full of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, potassium, and fiber. They also contain antioxidants, which help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.
  2. Good source of fiber: Apples are a rich source of fiber, especially pectin. Fiber helps regulate digestion, maintain proper blood sugar levels, and lower cholesterol levels.
  3. Low in calories: Apples are low in calories and make an excellent snack or addition to a healthy meal. That’s why they are often recommended as part of a weight-loss diet.
  4. Support digestion: Eating apples can help prevent constipation and other digestive problems, thanks to their fiber content.
  5. Improve heart health: Regular consumption of apples can help lower the risk of heart disease, as the fiber and antioxidants in apples have a beneficial effect on heart health.
  6. Regulate blood sugar levels: The ingredients in apples help control blood sugar levels, which is beneficial for both diabetics and people concerned with diabetes prevention.
  7. Healthy for skin: Vitamin C in apples helps in collagen production, which promotes healthy skin. Additionally, antioxidants in the fruit help protect the skin from harmful external factors.
  8. Support healthy weight loss: Apples contain ingredients that help increase feelings of fullness, which can help control appetite and facilitate weight loss.
  9. Good taste and variety: Apples come in many varieties, with different tastes and textures. This allows them to be eaten in many ways, by adding them to salads, preparing desserts, juice, or simply munching on them raw.

Apples are a healthy and tasty addition to your daily diet that can bring many health benefits. Adding this fruit to your diet can be a simple step towards a healthier lifestyle. So eat as many as possible, and also use them in your kitchen for baking, as well as for frying, for example, sweet apple fritters.

Recipes for shortcrust apple cakes

Shortcrust apple cakes are probably the most traditional cakes in Polish cuisine. Everyone knows and loves our Polish shortcrust apple pies baked with crumble and plenty of apples. But such cakes are not only a domain of Polish cuisine. In many cuisines around the world, you will find delicious shortcrust apple pies – like the famous American Apple Pie. Here I provide eight recipes for shortcrust apple cakes, but there are definitely more on the blog. Be sure to check them all out.

Meringue apple pie with nuts

Such a meringue apple pie with nuts is, for me, the perfect autumn cake. A wonderful shortcrust pastry that literally melts in your mouth. Plus, a thick layer of apple filling (you can use fresh apples or jarred roasted ones) hidden under a layer of sweet, delicious meringue. And finally, crunchy and aromatic nuts, which release all their flavor and aroma thanks to baking.

Apple pie with almond crumble

This delicious apple pie with almond crumble is prepared more like a tart. I baked it in a round glass dish about 26 cm in size. This cake will be ideal for a smaller number of people, as you’ll divide it into fewer portions. I prepared the apple pie with ready-made roasted apples from a jar, and I added ground almonds to the crumble, which gave the cake a nice flavor. You must try it!

Best apple pie with crumble

I bake this apple pie with crumble probably most often, because my daughter absolutely loves it. It’s also the most popular apple pie on the blog! It’s prepared in a large baking pan, about 20/30 cm in size. The cake itself is very simple and quick to make, and grated apples are spread on top using a coarse grater. This is probably the most traditional of apple pies and worth saving for later.

French apple pie with cream

This French shortcrust apple pie with cream and almonds is incredibly charming and exceptionally tasty. I baked it in a small round pan. Here, I layered sliced apples on the shortcrust pastry, which I then poured over with a cream based on heavy cream. Before baking, the apple pie is sprinkled with almond flakes, which add not only flavor but also a nice crunch.

American Apple Pie

American Apple Pie is one of Americans’ favorite cakes. This cake is also baked in a smaller round tart pan or a slightly taller pan. Here, the shortcrust pastry is more elastic than our traditional one, making it easier to work with and cut into fancy shapes. A thick layer of apples is spread on the pastry, and most often, another layer of pastry is placed on top – either cut out or in a lattice pattern.

Lemon apple pie

Lemon apple pie is made a bit differently from all the above shortcrust pastries. Here, you first need to bake two separate layers of honey cake. You can even bake these cakes in advance and store them wrapped in cling film. Then, you layer the cake with hot, roasted apples mixed with lemon jelly. The cake must sit with these apples for several hours so that it softens from the apples. But after these few hours, the apple pie tastes absolutely fabulous! Wonderfully lemony in taste, with a melt-in-your-mouth cake. You must try it!

Chocolate apple pie

This chocolate apple pie is extraordinary and you absolutely must bake it if you like chocolate cakes. This cake is an insane shortcrust chocolate cake, filled with an amazing apple mixture combined with chopped chocolate. You haven’t tasted an apple pie like this before! Tatra apple pie

My list of shortcrust apple cakes concludes with Tatra apple pie. This delicious apple pie with a distinctive appearance is made with coarse wheat flour, which gives the apple pie an exceptionally delicate pastry. Plus, a mass of thin apple slices arranged one on top of the other, which makes no other cake look quite like the Tatra apple pie. Choose firm apples here so they don’t fall apart during baking.

Recipes for fluffy apple cakes

In contrast to shortcrust pastries, there are fluffy and tall cakes baked with apples. Usually, these are creamed cakes, where either butter is creamed with sugar into a fluffy mass, or eggs with sugar. Long mixing of butter with sugar and eggs with sugar makes the cake light and soft. Such cakes can have different flavors and various additions besides apples. Sometimes, the apples are not even visible at first glance, as they can be added to the dough in grated form. Usually, however, the apple is sliced and placed on top of the cake. See my selected recipes for fluffy apple cakes.

Fluffy apple pie

This fluffy apple pie has a nice and refreshing, slightly lemony taste. Here, I divided the creamed butter cake with lemon zest into two portions. I placed one portion into a springform pan and layered lightly fried apples on top. I covered them with the second portion of dough and baked it. After baking, the cake is wonderfully fluffy with a hidden layer of apples inside.

This creamed apple cake is wonderful in its simplicity and at the same time delightful in taste. A tall, fluffy cake with apple slices on top tastes perfect with a cup of tea or a cup of coffee. Spiced apple bundt cake

This spiced apple bundt cake is an example of a cake where it’s not immediately obvious that it’s an apple cake. I grated the apples here on a coarse grater and mixed them directly into the bundt cake batter. Thanks to this, the spiced bundt cake, after baking, is not only very tasty but also nicely moist. This allows it to retain its freshness and softness for a long time. I highly recommend it, especially for people who are reluctant to reach for fruit cakes – here, they won’t even realize they’re eating them.

Russian sponge apple pie

This sponge apple pie is incredibly easy to make, and delicious too! Watch my preparation video and see how simple this cake is.

Toffee apple cake

I made this incredibly appetizing toffee apple cake with the addition of toffee mass, which I blended together with oil, eggs, and the other cake ingredients. Highly recommended!
