Gingerbread hot chocolate – the taste of Christmas in a mug
During winter and autumn, we very eagerly reach for hot chocolate to drink in our home. For me, it’s a bit of a combination of dessert and a drink. This chocolate perfectly warms you up and at the same time tastes wonderful thanks to the chocolate. Until now, I most often made Viennese hot chocolate for us, but I must admit that this gingerbread version captivated me. Not only does it taste wonderful, but it’s also incredibly simple and quick to make. You must try it!

Ingredients needed to prepare gingerbread hot chocolate
To prepare this hot chocolate, you only need four ingredients. All of them you either already have at home or can easily buy even in a local convenience store. Below is a list of ingredients I used.
- milk – the base of this hot chocolate is milk – for four servings you will need one liter of milk. You can use any milk – I used cow’s milk with 1.5% fat content. If you wish, you can also use milk with a different fat content, or plant-based milk.
- chocolate – the second important ingredient is, of course, chocolate. Here I recommend dark chocolate with a high cocoa content. It will give a distinct flavor and a nice color. Lately, it’s becoming harder to find 100g dark chocolate, but I buy it at Lidl or Biedronka from their own brands, and they are great!
- sugar – to give the hot chocolate a slightly sweeter taste, I added a little sugar, here I used cane sugar. You can also use regular sugar, or even erythritol or xylitol.
- gingerbread spice – use good quality gingerbread spice here. If you have a store-bought spice, pay attention to its ingredients – if it has flour as the first ingredient – do not use it! You don’t need flour in hot chocolate, and besides, such a spice is not very intense in taste and aroma. As always, the best is homemade gingerbread spice. If you don’t have good quality gingerbread spice, use a teaspoon of cinnamon, half a teaspoon of nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger instead.

What kind of chocolate for drinking – milk or dark?
As I wrote above – I recommend dark chocolate here more, because it has a more intense flavor. However, if you don’t like dark chocolate, or you don’t have it and the shops are closed, you can use milk chocolate. In that case, refrain from adding sugar to the hot chocolate so that the drink is not too sweet.
Vegan hot chocolate
If you want to prepare vegan hot chocolate, in addition to replacing cow’s milk with its plant-based equivalent, also remember to use vegan chocolate.

How to prepare gingerbread hot chocolate
Preparing hot chocolate to drink shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes, and heating the milk will take the longest. It doesn’t have to be boiling, just hot enough for the chocolate to melt.
Chop the chocolate into small pieces for melting – then it will melt faster and easier. Add gingerbread spice, sugar, and chopped chocolate to the hot milk. Stir everything with a whisk until the chocolate melts and everything is well combined. You can taste the drink, and if you feel the need, you can sweeten the chocolate or add more gingerbread spice. If you appreciate strong flavors, you can even add black pepper to give it a spicy kick.

Serving hot chocolate
How to serve hot chocolate? That’s up to you! This gingerbread hot chocolate is already so intense in flavor that it doesn’t need many additions. You can, of course, top it with whipped cream and sprinkle with crushed gingerbread. Delicious gingerbread cookies served on a plate next to a mug of hot chocolate certainly wouldn’t hurt either :)
Instead of a spoon, you can insert a longer cinnamon stick, which will add an extra cinnamon flavor to the chocolate. I hope that such an aromatic gingerbread hot chocolate will appeal to you and your loved ones, and you will drink it often this winter! And if you like such gingerbread flavors, be sure to also prepare a fantastic gingerbread latte!
