Chocolate cake with a whole orange – notes
For some time now, I’ve wanted to bake such a cake with a whole boiled orange, and finally, the perfect opportunity arose.
My husband was just leaving for another long mountain run – Etapowa Triada in the Beskids, and then I like to bake him and his friends a nice cake that will provide them with a lot of energy and at the same time be “easy to handle”.
I had previously spotted this cake with boiled orange on Marta gotuje’s blog and I liked this chocolate-orange flavor combination.
The cake turned out super chocolatey, moist, and very tasty. My only comment about it is that it crumbles a bit when sliced, but that didn’t bother me. It’s possible that it’s a matter of the orange itself – not blended enough, or a bit too large.

What ingredients are needed to make chocolate orange cake?
For this cake, you will only need basic ingredients – generally available in every store. I used the following products here:
- orange – preferably organic, but if you can’t get one, wash it well with warm water beforehand.
- chocolate – I used dark chocolate here because I don’t like overly sweet cakes. This cake is not very sweet, so if you prefer sweeter cakes, you can use milk chocolate, or mix dark and milk chocolate.
- oil – the fat added to the cake is oil; I used rapeseed oil, but sunflower oil or melted coconut oil can also be used.
- wheat flour – regular flour type 450 or 500
- cocoa – in addition to chocolate, some cocoa is added to the cake; it must be bitter cocoa – regular or defatted. If you don’t have cocoa, add more flour instead.

How to make a whole orange cake – tips
Start preparing the cake by boiling the orange, as this will take the most time. It’s best to boil it in a small but tall pot so that it is completely covered with water. I boiled my orange for about 30 minutes, and then left it in that water until it cooled down.
To make it easier to blend the orange, I suggest cutting it into smaller pieces – you can also remove the seeds at this point. I blended the orange with a food processor, a blender can also be used. Try to blend the peel particularly well. Although later, small pieces of peel don’t bother the cake at all.
To make the cake nicely fluffy, it’s good to thoroughly beat the eggs with sugar. I beat them for several minutes until they became very fluffy and light in color.
Additionally, I sifted the flour through a sieve to aerate it.
After baking, I drizzled my cake with melted milk chocolate. How to make chocolate glaze for cake? Simply heat about 50 ml of heavy cream in a saucepan, add broken chocolate to the hot cream, and stir until combined. When the chocolate glaze cools and thickens slightly, you can pour it over the top of the cake.

How many calories does chocolate orange cake have?
One serving of this cake (assuming 12 slices) will have approximately 390 kcal. However, a slice with chocolate glaze made from 50 ml of heavy cream and 100 g of chocolate will already have about 446 kcal. Ideal calorie count for people training and before or after significant physical exertion. Nerves related to family life also count ;)
Be sure to bake this chocolate cake with boiled orange and let me know in the comments how you liked it!
