Why bake these chocolate muffins with blueberries?
Recently, I craved something sweet with coffee, and at the same time, I needed something easy to pack and take in the car for a trip to the mountains. That’s how these chocolate muffins with blueberries were born. I opted for a quick and uncomplicated recipe and preparation – entirely without a mixer. All you need are two bowls, a spoon, and a knife to chop the chocolate. The whole thing is ready in less than 35-40 minutes. A moment of cooling and you can enjoy the still warm muffins – then you also get the bonus of gently flowing chocolate! Be sure to save this recipe for later, because it’s worth having such express, emergency muffins on hand!
What ingredients are needed to bake chocolate muffins?
To make these homemade muffins with chocolate and blueberries, you will only need a few basic ingredients. Below is a condensed list of the products I used and possible substitutes.
- chocolate – I prefer less sweet baked goods and added 100g of dark chocolate here, but if you prefer sweet muffins, you can use milk chocolate, or mix these two types – you can also use a little less or a little more chocolate
- Greek yogurt – I used thick and fattier Greek yogurt (from a Lidl tub), you can also use fat-free yogurt, natural skyr, or thick plain natural yogurt here
- cocoa – you need bitter cocoa here (e.g., Wedel), if you don’t have it, it’s not a problem, use more flour instead – then use a total of 300g of wheat flour,
- oil – I use rapeseed oil, you can also use another oil with a delicate flavor – e.g., sunflower oil, or even melted coconut oil

How many kcal do 100g of chocolate muffins have?
In the table below the recipe, I provided the calorie count for 1 muffin – assuming I got 17 of them. You might get a different number of muffins, as it depends on the size of the molds or cupcake liners. In that case, the calorie count per piece will be different from mine. 100g of baked muffins made from the products I used had 349 kcal (carbohydrates – 41g, proteins – 6g, fats – 17.6g).
Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ
Can frozen blueberries be used for muffins?
Yes. Frozen blueberries do not need to be thawed beforehand. Simply add them directly to the batter, mixing gently so they don’t color it too much.
Can other fruits be added to muffins?
Of course! Other small fruits work well here – preferably harder ones. You can use strawberries, sour cherries, sweet cherries, but also peaches or apricots. It’s worth cutting larger fruits into smaller pieces beforehand.
Can muffins be prepared without a mixer?
Yes, this recipe is prepared without a mixer. Simply combine the wet and dry ingredients using a whisk or a spoon. This way, you can prepare the muffins quickly and without unnecessary equipment.
How to store chocolate muffins with blueberries?
After cooling completely, store the muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for 2–3 days. Thanks to the Greek yogurt, they will remain soft and moist. If it’s hot and humid at home, after two days it’s worth putting the muffins in the refrigerator or another cool place so they don’t spoil from the fruit.
Can muffins be frozen?
Yes. After cooling, place them in an airtight container or freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Before serving, let them thaw at room temperature.
