- 400 g wheat flour – all-purpose (- I used type 500)
- 4 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar
- 100 g butter (cold)
- 3 egg yolks (from L-sized eggs)
- about 2 tablespoons water (cold – optional)

- 260 g poppy seeds (ground)
- 320 ml milk (hot)
- 2 eggs (L-sized)
- 150 g powdered sugar (- 1 cup)
- 1 tablespoon butter (soft)
- almond extract (optional – I love it with poppy seeds)

- 200 g powdered sugar (- 1 and 1/3 cups)
- a few tablespoons milk (to consistency)

How to make the poppy seed filling for poppy seed cake
- Pour hot milk over the ground poppy seeds and set aside to cool – for me, the poppy seeds absorbed all the milk. If the poppy seeds are still wet after cooling, line a fine-mesh sieve with gauze/muslin cloth/paper towels and pour the poppy seeds through the sieve to remove excess water.260 g poppy seeds, 320 ml milk
- Briefly blend the eggs with powdered sugar and butter.2 eggs, 150 g powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon butter
- Add the egg mixture to the poppy seeds and mix.
- You can now add some almond extract if you are using it.almond extract
- Divide the poppy seeds into 3 roughly equal portions.
How to make shortcrust yeast dough for poppy seed cake
- Add a teaspoon of sugar to the yeast and rub them together thoroughly – the yeast should become liquid.40 g yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar
- To the flour, add the butter cut into smaller pieces, sugar, vanilla sugar, egg yolks, and yeast.400 g wheat flour – all-purpose, 4 tablespoons powdered sugar, 100 g butter, 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar
- Briefly chop everything together – you can do this with a knife, or like me, in a food processor.
- Knead the dough – if the dough doesn’t stick together well, add a little cold water.3 egg yolks, about 2 tablespoons water
- Divide the finished dough into 4 equal portions.
How to make layered poppy seed cake
- Roll out each portion of dough very thinly (for me, it was about 2 mm) to the size of the baking pan. It’s a good idea to roll it out directly on baking paper, as it makes it easier to transfer the dough to the pan.
- Place the first layer of dough in the baking pan along with the baking paper.
- Spread one portion of the poppy seed filling evenly over the dough.
- Place the second layer of dough, using the baking paper to help – I flipped it upside down and carefully peeled it off. Cut off any excess pieces on the sides with a knife and attach them where the dough is missing.
- Place poppy seeds on the dough, then place the next layer of dough, and then poppy seeds again.
- Arrange the last piece of dough.
- Cover the baking pan with the dough with plastic wrap and leave it in a warm place overnight.
- In the morning, remove the plastic wrap from the dough and bake the poppy seed cake at 190 degrees (top-bottom mode) for about 40 minutes. If the top of the cake starts to brown too much, cover it with aluminum foil during baking.
- After baking, cool the cake.
How to make icing for poppy seed cake
- Pour the powdered sugar into a bowl.200 g powdered sugar
- Add milk one tablespoon at a time until you get a slightly liquid icing.a few tablespoons milk
- Spread the icing over the cake.

Before Christmas, I didn’t have time to bake it, so I made it later.
We ate the layered poppy seed cake, and the recipe waited and lay there until I finally put it on the blog :)
Don’t be scared by the long description of the preparation, because the cake is not difficult to make.
It rather requires a bit of time – including rising overnight.
Yes, yes – because this layered poppy seed cake is prepared, for example, in the evening, left for several hours, and only then baked.

How to make poppy seed cake on shortcrust-yeast dough – tips
We prepare a simple and quick dough with yeast and divide it into 4 portions.
We roll each of them thinly to the size of the baking sheet.
We layer the thinly rolled dough sheets with poppy seed filling, cover, and leave to rise.
Overnight, our shortcrust-yeast dough slowly rises and puffs up.
Then we bake our yeast poppy seed cake, and after baking, the cake has such beautiful layers.

What poppy seeds for poppy seed cake?
In this case, I recommend buying ground poppy seeds.
You will need one package and a little bit from another.
Ground poppy seeds are convenient because they are already pre-ground.
Therefore, for this poppy seed cake, simply pour hot milk over it and wait for it to cool down.
You don’t need to cook it and grind it several times in a grinder.
I didn’t add any dried fruits or nuts to the poppy seed filling, but if you like them, you can certainly add them.
Just chop the nuts so they are not too big.
