What is apple crumble – origin
Crumble is a very simple dessert consisting of a layer of fruit – in this case – apples – baked under a crispy crumble topping. It is a popular dish in British and American cuisine, but known and loved worldwide for its simplicity and taste.
The basic ingredients for crumble are:
- Fruit – most often, fruits such as apples, strawberries, raspberries, peaches, cherries, or blueberries are used. The fruit is usually sprinkled with sugar and sometimes seasoned with cinnamon or other spices to enhance its flavor.
- Crumble topping – this is a mixture of flour, sugar, and butter, which is sprinkled over the fruit. When the dessert bakes, the crumble becomes crispy and golden, and the fruit softens and releases juice.
Crumble is served warm – most often with a scoop of ice cream. Such a warm dessert tastes especially good on autumn and winter days, as it is wonderfully warming.
If apple pie is your favorite or one of your favorite cakes, then you must prepare such a quick warm apple dessert – you will surely love it!

Preparing apple crumble – tips
To prepare the apple filling for this dessert, you need to peel your apples – I recommend a slotted knife here and cut them into quarters. Then it’s easy to remove the core. Now cut the apple flesh into thin slices or cubes. Transfer the chopped apples to an ovenproof dish and add raspberries. I added frozen raspberries because fresh ones are already prohibitively expensive. I mixed the fruit with 1/3 cup of sugar (you can add less if your apples are sweet), a little lemon juice, and a little potato starch. The potato starch here is to thicken the juice that will be released from the fruit during baking. If you are making your crumble with only apples, you don’t need to add potato starch, as they are not as juicy as raspberries.
Prepare the crumble topping by briefly kneading together flour, butter, cinnamon, and sugar – you will get a loose and slightly sweet crumble. Sprinkle the cinnamon crumble over the fruit and place the crumble dish in the oven to bake.

Variations of the apple crumble recipe
I prepared my apple crumble with raspberries – thanks to this, the apple filling got a nice red color and an interesting taste. If you don’t have raspberries – neither fresh nor frozen – use about 700g of apples in this recipe – although if you use more, the crumble will also be delicious.
You can also prepare apple crumble in other flavor variations.
Apple and cranberry crumble – recipe for a festive dessert
In winter, instead of raspberries, you can add fresh or frozen cranberries to the apples. I suggest then adding grated orange zest and orange juice instead of lemon juice to the apple filling for flavor. You can also add half a teaspoon of ground ginger in addition to cinnamon. You will get a great winter festive dessert, perfect for serving during the Christmas season.
Apple and oat crumble – recipe for a healthier dessert
You can add some rolled oats to the apple crumble topping – a maximum of about half a cup. Mix the oats together with flour, sugar, and butter. Add half a teaspoon more ground cinnamon to give the dessert a more warming character. You can also additionally sprinkle chopped nuts on top of the crumble, which will add crunchiness to the dessert and provide healthy fats.

How to serve apple crumble?
Immediately after baking, let the apple crumble cool slightly, as the fruit and fruit juice are very hot and you could burn yourself! About 15 minutes of cooling is enough for the baked apple dessert to be ready to eat.
And what to serve such apples with crumble with?
Personally, I like ice cream with warm crumble – a scoop of vanilla ice cream is ideal for me. You can serve it with your favorite ice cream.
What else with crumble besides ice cream?
Vanilla sauce – also known as English sauce – works great here. On the blog, you’ll find a recipe for English sauce that you can easily make at home.
If you don’t want to add more calories than necessary to this dessert, simply sprinkle the top of the crumble with powdered sugar, or serve the crumble with a little natural yogurt. Although the dessert itself, without any additions, is so delicious that it “stands on its own”. I tend to stand over the crumble dish and eat it with a spoon directly from the baking dish :)

How many calories does apple crumble have?
Here I can provide the calorie count I calculated using the products I used and with the addition of raspberries to the apple filling. For me, 100g of the baked apple dessert had about 240 kcal. If you divide the whole into 8 portions, each will have about 330 kcal, 52g carbohydrates, 14g fat, and 3.5g protein. This calorie count is without additions like ice cream or vanilla sauce – so take that into account when serving portions.

How to store apple crumble?
If the apples with crumble topping are to be eaten on the same day they were baked, you can keep them directly on the kitchen counter. Cover any remaining dessert (or the whole thing if it will be eaten later) with foil and put it in the refrigerator. In the refrigerator, apple crumble can last up to 5 days.
You can also freeze apple crumble. After it has completely cooled, wrap the dish thoroughly with cling film and put it in the freezer – it can be stored there for about 3 months.
If you want to reheat refrigerated crumble, place it in an oven preheated to 180 degrees Celsius and bake for about 15 minutes.
