Puff pastry with apples – notes
Oh, these fried cookies I made are delicious!
My children enjoyed them so much that my son ate eight pieces by himself one day, and the next day they were looking for more. They are terribly picky when it comes to sweets, so this is a huge recommendation for me.
I found the idea for these cookies from Emily Leary and immediately loved it.
I love all apple cakes, and if there’s cinnamon with them, I don’t need anything else to be happy.
And these pastries don’t even need to be baked! You must try this recipe!

Ingredients for fried apple cookies and substitutes
You will only need a few ingredients to prepare these cookies. Moreover, these are generally available products. Below is a list of the most important products I used and possible substitutes.
- puff pastry – I used ready-made puff pastry here. If you have frozen, you need to thaw it beforehand. Buy any pastry – just two identical pieces at once, because they must be the same size.
- apples – hard apples that won’t fall apart after heating will be best – I used Jonagold apples, you can also use ready-made roasted apples, just choose dense ones with large pieces of apples
- sugar – I used regular white sugar here, but you can also use cane sugar, or even xylitol or erythritol

How to make puff pastry with apples – tips
Start preparing the cookies with the apples, as they need to be lightly roasted and then cooled.
While the apples are cooling, prepare the puff pastry.
I laid mine on the counter and, using a ruler, first divided it along the longer side into two parts – for me, the dividing line was at 13 cm. Then I divided the dough into 5 cm pieces – this gave me a total of 16 rectangles measuring 5 by 13 cm. These rectangles were not cut through, only lightly marked so I knew where to place the apples.
I placed some apples in the center of each rectangle and then covered it with the second puff pastry. I pressed the pastries together so they would stick, and finally, I pressed each rectangle with a fork.
The pastries must be well sealed so that they don’t fall apart during frying and the fruit doesn’t come out!

How to fry apple pastries?
You need to fry the apple pastries in very hot oil – to a temperature of about 180 degrees Celsius. If you don’t have a thermometer, you can drop a piece of potato into the oil, for example, and check if it starts frying nicely. It’s best to fry about 2 pastries at a time so as not to lower the oil temperature too much. The pastries fry quickly then – about 1-1.5 minutes per side. Flip the pastries to the other side during frying.
Remember to drain the pastries on a paper towel to get rid of excess fat!
Roll the still hot pastries in sugar mixed with cinnamon, and you can basically eat them right away!
These fried apple pastries remind me of McDonald’s pies – I don’t know if they still offer them, but they used to have such fried pastries with apples or cherries. Only theirs weren’t rolled in sugar after frying.

How many calories do fried apple pastries have?
I roughly calculated here that with my 16 pastries, each of them will have about 250 kcal. This is a somewhat estimated value, because I don’t know exactly how much oil was absorbed into them during frying. I added 150 ml of oil to their caloric value, so it should roughly match. If you use a different dough or make a different number of cookies, this caloric value will change.
How to store fried apple pastries?
I recommend storing these apple cookies (after they have completely cooled) in an airtight container or covered. Thanks to frying, the pastries are very tasty even after a few days. If you prefer to eat them warm, you can heat them briefly in the microwave.
I hope these puff pastry with apples will taste as good to you and your loved ones as they did to us. Be sure to let me know in the comments!
