How to make yeast buns with white poppy seeds

Step 1 – prepare the yeast starter

    • Crumble the yeast, add sugar and mix. Pour in warm (but not hot) milk, mix and set aside in a warm place for about 15-20 minutes.
      15 g yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar, 120 ml milk

Step 2 – prepare the yeast dough for the buns

    • Pour flour into a large bowl, add the remaining sugar, oil, and egg. Pour in the yeast starter and knead the dough.
      300 g wheat flour – all-purpose, 40 g sugar, 50 ml oil, 1 egg
    • Cover the bowl with the dough and set aside in a warm place for about an hour – until it rises.

Step 3 – prepare the poppy seed buns

    • After this time, take the dough out onto a floured surface and knead briefly.
    • Roll out the dough into a flat cake about 0.5-1 cm thick.
    • Spread about half of the dough with the white poppy seed filling.
about 100 g white poppy seed filling
    • Fold the dough so that the unspread part covers the spread part (see my video), lightly press the dough and cut into strips about 2 cm wide.
    • Twist each strip along its own axis – creating a screw-like shape, and then roll into a bun.
    • Arrange the twisted buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    • Cover the buns with a cloth and set aside for half an hour to rise.

Step 4 – bake the poppy seed buns

    • Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 170 degrees (fan-assisted).
    • Place the risen buns in the oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes – until golden brown.
    • After baking, cool the buns.
    • You can drizzle them with icing at the end – just add a little milk or heavy cream to powdered sugar.

White poppy seed yeast buns – notes

I don’t live in Poznań, or even nearby, but like all of Poland, I fell in love with their white poppy seed croissants baked mainly for Saint Martin’s Day. Now they are more generally available, but a few years ago they were practically impossible to get, so I baked Saint Martin’s croissants myself.

November 11th is coming soon, and with it, we’ll be enjoying these delicious croissants again.

If you’re in the mood, this year I recommend much quicker and definitely easier canned poppy seed buns – mine are with white poppy seed filling.

Croissants take much longer to prepare, but these yeast buns will be ready in about three hours.

What’s more – if you use ready-made white poppy seed filling, their preparation will be as easy as pie ;)

I bought ready-made white poppy seed filling in a can – it’s great that this kind is also available now. The filling is very tasty and has a good consistency (I bought the Bakalland brand filling).

I didn’t use all of it for the buns – I used less than half a can.

So you can make a double batch of buns right away, or use the rest of the filling for another baked good.

I hope you’ll enjoy these canned poppy seed yeast buns, and while I’m at it, I can also recommend preparing flaky poppy seed croissants :)

How to make white poppy seed filling?

Do you have white poppy seeds at home and don’t want to buy ready-made filling?

Then you can make such a filling yourself. On the blog, there is a recipe for poppy seed strudel, where I described exactly how to prepare poppy seed filling from seeds. A large portion is given there, so make it with half, or even 1/3 – that will be completely enough. You can also prepare a typical poppy seed filling like for Saint Martin’s croissants. I also suggest making it with 1/3 of the portion – unless you use the rest of the filling differently :)

How to make white poppy seed yeast buns – tips

You can make the yeast dough itself using your favorite recipe, or use the one I provided below the photos.

As usual, I used fresh yeast, but if you only have instant, use one packet (about 7 g). You don’t need to prepare a yeast starter; just add the yeast to the flour, add the rest of the ingredients, and knead the dough. If your home is rather cool, I recommend putting the yeast dough in the oven and leaving it there to rise. I very often turn on the oven and set the temperature to 30 degrees Celsius – then the dough rises even faster.

To make my poppy seed yeast buns look more attractive, I rolled them up and twisted them. I recorded a short video for you, so you can see how to make similar buns :)

White poppy seed yeast buns turn out very tasty and disappear in a flash.

My husband alone ate five! pieces in the evening.

You can additionally drizzle the buns with icing. Just put about a cup of powdered sugar into a bowl and add milk, about 3 tablespoons, one spoon at a time. Mix thoroughly and spread it over the buns. Icing not only adds sweetness to the yeast buns – it also makes them dry out less.

Store the buns in an airtight container to keep them fresh longer.

    P.S.

By the way, I recommend my book “Beata’s Best Bakes” where you will also find recipes for yeast cakes, and besides them, many other appetizing and simple recipes for homemade sweets.

Recipe for Yeast Buns with White Poppy Seed Fillling

This year for November 11th, join me in making these delicious and simple yeast buns with white poppy seeds. Preparing them is no different from making regular yeast dough, but I decided to focus on their appearance and gave them a fancy twist. Watch my short video on how to make these yeast buns to see how to shape them so they look beautiful. Once baked, the buns are fluffy, aromatic, and subtly sweet. White poppy seeds have a milder flavor than blue poppy seeds, giving these buns a completely different taste compared to traditional ones. You absolutely have to try them!

How to make yeast buns with white poppy seeds?

Check out my detailed step-by-step recipe and see just how simple it is. Buy a ready-made white poppy seed filling at the store to make the process even faster. Twist these fancy buns and get them in the oven as soon as possible! This recipe yields a generous batch of about 12 buns. They aren't huge, making them the perfect size for a dessert to enjoy with your coffee. I highly recommend them and encourage you to try my other yeast cake and pastry recipes as well.
