Why bake orange cake without a mixer?
Taking advantage of orange season, I baked my family this very simple and quick cake with orange juice and poppy seeds. The recipe itself is incredibly simple and quick, and you don’t even need a mixer to prepare the cake. Just mix the ingredients in a bowl with a whisk or a spoon. Additionally, the ingredients used for the cake are very basic and readily available in any store. Baking the cake will take you less than 1.5 hours, and you can enjoy its orange flavor. I promise you won’t stop at one slice, and this easy coffee cake will become a favorite for a long time :)

What ingredients are needed to bake an orange cake with poppy seeds?
To make this cake, you will need a few basic ingredients. Below is a condensed list of the products I used and possible substitutes.
- oil – I used rapeseed oil, but you can also use another oil with a delicate taste and smell
- natural yogurt – I used thick Greek yogurt; you can also use thick (not very watery) natural yogurt or natural skyr
- orange – you need orange juice and zest, but if you don’t have the fruit, use store-bought orange juice and omit the zest, or if you have dried zest, use it
- poppy seeds – here you need dry whole poppy seeds; this gives the cake nice poppy seed speckles. Ultimately, you can use ground poppy seeds, but be aware that it will color the cake a darker, more black color. You can also omit the poppy seeds if you don’t have them; the cake will still be delicious.

What instead of orange glaze for the cake?
If you don’t want to make a glaze so the cake isn’t too sweet (though I warn you, it’s not overly sweet anyway), you can sprinkle the top of the cake with just a little powdered sugar. You can also make chocolate ganache – just heat heavy cream with broken chocolate and spread it over the cake once it cools.

How to decorate a cake with orange juice?
After spreading the orange glaze on the cake, you can additionally sprinkle it with poppy seeds. But orange zest will also work well here – you can grate it from the fruit, or use candied orange peel. The flavors of orange and poppy seeds pair very well with almonds, so you can also sprinkle the cake with chopped almonds or almond flakes.

How to store orange cake with poppy seeds?
After baking and cooling, spread the glaze on the cake. Then it’s worth transferring it to an airtight container with a lid, or covering it with a cake dome, so that the cake retains its freshness and moisture for as long as possible. You don’t need to put the cake in the refrigerator. At room temperature, it can easily last for 5 days, or even longer. You can also freeze leftover cake for about 3 months.
I hope that this precisely described step-by-step recipe for moist orange poppy seed cake will be useful to you many times and you will gladly return to it.
