Austrian Vanillekipferl crescents – notes

I received the recipe for these vanilla crescents from my reader on Instagram and decided to bake these cookies for Christmas.

I had already seen Vanillekipferl recipes online before, but somehow I never got around to making them.

Now that I received the original Austrian vanilla cookie recipe, there was no turning back :)

I baked the shortbread cookies, and even made a short video of the preparation for you, so you can see how easy they are to make :)

How to make vanilla crescents – tips

In this recipe, the cookies are prepared with ground walnuts and no vanilla is even added :)

However, I wanted to be a bit closer to the name and added some vanilla sugar to the cookie dough.

Besides nuts and vanilla, you only need powdered sugar, wheat flour, and butter. The butter must be cold and added to the dough cut into smaller pieces.

What instead of walnuts for cookie dough?

If you don’t have walnuts, or don’t like them, you can use ground almonds. The cookies will taste great too.

Watch my short preparation video located just below the recipe and see how to shape the cookies into crescents or moons. Shaping the vanilla cookies is not difficult and won’t take much time.

Just remember not to move the cookies immediately after baking. When hot, they are still very soft and delicate. Once they cool, they will become more crumbly and crispy.

Then, place each cookie into a bowl with powdered sugar – so it sticks to the surface.

We put the finished cookies with powdered sugar into an airtight container and pray that at least some of them last until Christmas :)

I also recommend the Lebkuchen recipe, which are delicious soft gingerbread cookies with orange and lemon zest – they will create a perfect duo with these vanilla crescents.

By the way, I recommend my book “Beata’s Best Bakes” where you will find recipes not only for cookies, but also delicious cupcakes, cakes, and tortes. Such a book is also an ideal Christmas gift :D

I recommend following my instagram for delicious and easy recipes!

Vanilla Crescents Recipe

Today, I invite you to try the famous Austrian vanilla cookies shaped like little crescents, or half-moons. To me, these cookies look more like crescent moons than traditional rolls, but their original name, Vanillekipferl, translates directly to "vanilla crescents." The cookies themselves are incredibly quick and simple to make, and on top of that, they taste absolutely divine! See for yourselves—check out my step-by-step recipe and watch my preparation video located just below the recipe.

Making Vanilla Crescents

I made my shortcrust crescents with ground walnuts, which gave the cookies a wonderful flavor. I love walnuts, and I have to admit that I probably ate most of these cookies myself (there aren't many left for the holidays). I absolutely fell in love with them—the crescents are delightfully crunchy yet melt in your mouth at the same time. The thick dusting of powdered sugar makes them look like they are covered in snow, which makes them perfect for the winter season. Arrange the vanilla crescents on a small plate and dust them generously with powdered sugar—I am convinced everyone will be delighted by both their taste and appearance :)

How to Store the Cookies?

I recommend keeping them in an airtight container with a lid—this could be a pretty holiday tin or a large cookie jar. They will look beautiful on display in a jar like that :) When stored properly, these cookies can keep for a long time—easily up to several months. You absolutely have to bake them, and don't forget to check out my other Christmas recipes. I'm sure you will find something you love.
